Salvas
(2), Putnam (2), Coonradt, Baker & Hotaling Take Summernats Gold
The Putnam Propulsion WDRA Super Dirt Series headed to Chico’s R/C
Speedway in LaFargeville, NY for the 8th running of the
Summernationals. For the first time in several years the
Summernationals was not effected by rain on any night, as hot and humid
temperatures ruled the weekend. The track was in fantastic shape, and
got stickier and stickier at the night went on.
The first main to hit the track was for the Big Block 19-turn division.
By virtue of his win in the Fred’s Fab ‘N Fold Dash for Cash, Eric
Salvas held the pole position, and would put that to good use, quickly
bolting out to the lead. Jeff Hotaling and Shilo Boyce would put on a
torrid battle for second early on, until contact between the two would
send Hotaling’s 99 car spinning. Salvas would stretch out a comfortable
lead, putting all but the top 3 a lap down by the ½ way mark. Despite a
late race bobble in traffic, no one could touch the blistering fast
Salvas. Boyce would hang on for second with a hard charging Hotaling
settling for third. Chico Taylor and B-Main winner Jason Blum rounded
out the top 5.
Nitro Sprints were up next, with Loughead Motorsports Cash Dash winner
Todd Putnam showing the way for the entire distance. Todd Moran,
subbing for Dave Loughead would challenge Putnam early, but his set-up
would go away shortly. Ed Strada would manage to stay on the lead lap,
but was not able to mount a challenge for Putnam. Moran would take
third, completing a top 3 sweep for the Limited Engine cars. North
Carolina’s Aaron Crumpler was the top Open Sprinter with Chris Taylor
not able to start.
In the Small Block division, FF’NF Dash winner Bob Godgart would jump
to the point, but it would be short-lived as an excursion through the
grassy infield would end his hopes to repeat his win at Master Hobbies
Speedway. This would give the lead to WNY hot-shoe Rob Hillman, but top
qualifier Kirt Coonradt and B-Main winner Joe Rodriguez were right on
his back bumper. Hillman held the lead while Rodriguez and Coonradt
swapped 2nd place for several laps. Eventually Coonradt
would settle into second, and set his sights on the lead. Coonradt and
Rodriguez would slip by Hillman on a slight bobble. Rodriguez was able
to hang with Coonradt for a while, but would eventually fade. J-Rod
held on for second with Hillman in third. B-Main bump-car Rich Hammond
would take fourth with Godgart rebounding for 5th.
For the 13.5 brushless division, Dash winner Tom Anderson would take the
early lead with teammate Bob Baker in tow. As Baker was turning up the
heat with a big challenge for the lead, He would bobble and choose a
trip through the infield rather than crashing w/ Anderson. Suddenly
leader Anderson’s car lost power and coasted to a stop with mechanical
problems, handing the lead to Blum. By now Baker was on the charge and
quickly reeling in the leader. Blum was able to hold Baker off for a
while but Baker’s car was too fast to hold off. At the finish it would
be Baker followed by Blum and Mike Jeffery as the only cars on the lead
lap. Marty Bunker and Rob Hillman rounded out the top 5.
Electric Sprints were up next, with Extreme Grafix Dash winner Barry
Wallace on the point. After some trouble on the start, Eric Salvas
would find himself in the lead. Staying out of trouble was the name of
the game in this race, and Salvas did that best. Jeff Winzens would
challenge briefly, but settle for second over a lap off the leader’s
pace. Barry Wallace would rebound from an excursion through the slick
infield for third with Keith Watson and Rob Hillman rounding out the top
5.
The EDM Big Block Modified class took the racing surface next, with
FF’NF Dash winner Jeff Hotaling dominating the event. This main was
also a little ugly, with only 4 cars making it to the end. Regardless,
no one had anything for Hotaling, who would lead from green to checker.
Reggie Hammer authored a nice drive to stay out of trouble and take
second over Dan Gill, who survived an early race encounter with a
marshall’s ankle, and “The Rocket”, Steve Miller.
Todd Putnam dominated the Nitro EDM class, Tqing, taking the big bucks
in the Loughead Motorsports dash, and leading the A-Main wire to wire.
All this with a limited TG engine. Dylan Watier would drive from deep
in the pack to snag second, with Shilo Boyce in third. Todd Moran and
Jeff Hotaling rounded out the top 5.
In other action, Hoagie Shepard just edged Warren Stevenson for the
Chico’s Pro-Truck division win. The trucks ran a Saturday-only format.
The next event for the Putnam Propulsion Super Dirt Series will be at
Redneck (outdoor) R/C Raceway in Oswego, NY. This will be the 4th event
for the combined Championship Series.
Wally’s notes:
· Thanks
to everyone for making the trek up north to Chico’s!
· Chris,
Chico and the whole Taylor family did a great job on the track and
running the races. When the sun went down the track was really fast!
· Fred’s
Fab ‘N Fold and Dave Loughead fronted cash prizes. A big thanks to
those guys and their dedication the RC racing.
· Dan
Gill of Atomic Signworks provided TQ and A-Main trophies. Thanks Dan!
· Temperatures
were pretty high, but there was a nice breeze….most of us pitted off of
turns 3 and 4 were down wind of the “Johnny on the Spot” though!
· How
great was it to see Billy Kimpton in NY for a race??? This time he was
wrenching for NC hot-shoe Aaron Crumpler who was making his first visit
to the Empire State. On Saturday Billy had a different role…..turning
wrenches for RCer Kevin Ridley’s Sportsman ride at the Land of Legends.
· Terry
Schmitt took part in the Friday portion of the Summernationals, but also
trekked south on Saturday to assist the Ridley effort. Kevin is leading
the Sportsman points at 2 tracks this summer and is really having a
break-out type of season.
· It
was a good weekend for the Putnam “team cars” as Todd brought home the
hardware for the gassers, while Kirt claimed Small Block.
· Among
sea of Terminator-based cars, Eric & Steve Salvas marched to the beat of
a different drum with some prototype Custom Works machines that they had
a hand in designing. Both made the 19t A-Main, with Eric dominating the
field, while Steve jetted off to Drummondville on Saturday.
· The
Baker Construction team cars really have the Brushless class figured
out. Had it not been for a mechanical failure, they probably would have
finished one-two. I’ll let them fight it out over who should have won!
· Bob
advises that construction on “The Bakery” is progressing nicely. For
those who don’t know, “The Bakery” is the track that he is building on
the west side of Rochester. I’m not sure what the track will really be
called, but “The Bakery” just seems to fit! It will be nice to see a
track in that area again.
· A
1000 Islands vacationing Bob Mott was spotted in the pits on Saturday.
He was able to assist Jeff Winzens straighten out his sprinter that was
down right evil to drive. I know, because I took it for a few laps and
was dumbfounded!
· Ed
Strada continues to impress me more each time I see him race. I figure
that by the time he gets this RC thing perfected, he’ll be off running a
1:1 car somewhere, following in the footsteps of his head
wrench…dad….even though dad denies it!
· I
think I spotted J-Rod eyeing up Burt Little’s low-rider in the parking
lot! Sorry J-Rod, I couldn’t resist!
· For
someone who wasn’t going to race, Rich Hammond had quite a weekend,
bumping up to the A Main and coming away with a fine fourth place finish
with a Regginator-111.
· Barry
Wallace was able to save himself some dough (and work) by claiming
victory in the Sprint Car dash that his Extreme Grafix sponsored.
· Great
to see Mr. Todd!
· Frenchie
missed Friday’s qualifying rounds, but during the D-Main looked like he
had a car to do a lot of bumping with---until mechanical issues took him
out of the C-Main.
· Congrats
to Mitch Wing for taking the biggest prize of the weekend—the Putnam
Pro-Car that was raffled off.
· Speaking
of giving things away, what a great bunch of door prizes. Thanks again
to all the great companies that contributed!
· I
loved the “Canada Joe” flashback paint scheme on Dylan Watier’s Nitro
EDM!
· Quite
a few new faces to the WRDA at the Summernats. That bodes well that
despite the crappy economy, we still have some new blood in the hobby.
· Since
returning to the hobby just over a year ago, Shilo Boyce continues to
improve and impress. He has been a consistent A-Main contender wherever
he goes this summer.
· In
the Small Block B-Main J-Rod, Steve Thompson and Rich Hammond put on
quite a show for several laps while fighting it out for the transfer
spots.
· If
you took a close look at Rob Hillman’s car, you would not believe that
it would be an A-A main contender week in and week out in the Small
Block class….imagine what he could do if Dylan gave him a good car!!!
· Troyer
Race Cars employee Rick Pickens managed to snag some Troyer goodies to
hand out.
· I
have to give a shout to Bob Godgart for taking his first WDRA win at
Master Hobbies. Bob was razzing me about not getting a story on the
race up!
· Tom
“Tomahawk” Taylor has really put in some good runs in Small Block this
year. The Summerants was no different as he put his ride into the
A-Main.
· Mike
Jeffery of JRC had a new Nitro EDM on the track. I think it may have
been the debut for the car. It looked like he had a little trouble
getting a handle on the new ride. Here’s hoping he gets the bugs worked
out of it!
· I
lost count of how many classes Jeff Hotaling entered! Maybe it was too
many, as he didn’t seem to have his normal edge over the field.
That’s it for now. Hope to see everyone at the next WDRA event!

Joe’s
Hobbies Speedway Up Next to Host Putnam Propulsion Western SDS
The 4th and final leg of the WDRA
Putnam Propulsion Super Dirt Series, Western Region will head to Joe’s
Hobbies in Lockport, NY on Saturday July 5th. This will be
the second year for the track at Joe’s on the WDRA circuit.
In the first ever WDRA race at Joe’s last
year, Jason Blum captured his first WDRA A-Main win in the Big Block
division, and then turned around and snagged the Modified class
checkered flag as well. Dan Gill and Matt Olmsted chased Blum across
the line both divisions, only swapping 2nd and 3rd
between the classes.
In the Small Block division Mike Jeffery took
one of his class leading 6 wins at Joe’s in 2007. Rob Hillman and Dave
Harris took second and third. These 2 drivers would have to be
considered the favorites for 2008, as Jeffery has moved up to the newly
formed brushless division.
Western Series points will be finalized at
Joe’s. With a driver’s worst finish being dropped from the final point
standings, Jeff Hotaling, on the strength of 3 wins has locked up the
Western Series Big Block 19t title. Matt Olmsted, with 3 top 5 finishes
appears to have 2nd locked up, while Dylan Watier is
currently in third. Watier will be looking for a good showing at his
home track, as Jason Blum, Chris Taylor, Dan Gill and Shilo Boyce all
have a mathematical shot at the third spot.
In the Small Block Ranks, Rob Hillman leads
the pack with 2 wins, with Barry Wallace in second. Unofficially, if
Wallace finds victory lane at Joe’s, Hillman will need to finish 7th
or better to secure the Western Series crown. Joe Rodriguez is
currently in third, and unofficially will need a win, Hillman to finish
13th or worse and Wallace to finish 5th or worse
to take the crown.
The 13.5 Brushless standings are a bit
clearer cut, as Bob Baker’s 2 wins and a second place finish lock him
into the title. Tom Anderson is currently in second place, but 3rd
place Mike Jeffery could overtake him. Anderson will need a 3rd
place finish to secure second place, even if Jeffery were to take the
win.
The track will open for practice at
2pm. The first heat will roll at 4:00. Joe’s Hobbies Speedway is
located at 5659 Upper Mountain Road, Lockport, NY 14094.

Putnam Propulsion Super Dirt Series Championship to Kick Off at
Fingerlakes
The WDRA Putnam Propulsion Super Dirt Series will head to Fingerlakes
Raceway on Saturday May 17th. This will be the first event on the
combined Championship Series. Fingerlakes Raceway has been on the Super
Dirt Series schedule since the WDRA was founded in 2001, and has hosted
the Summernationals 5 times.
In 2007, Pete D’Agnolo swept both Modified and Big Block Stock during
the Summernationals at Fingerlakes, while it was eventual series
champion Mike Jeffery taking the checkered flag in the Small Block
Class.
This year classes running for points in the
Championship Series will be Big Block Modified, Big Block 19-turn, Small
Block and Brushless EDM. Also joining the action will be second leg of
the JRC Sprint Car Challenge Series 9 8am, with practice starting at
9am. Racing starts at noon. Sunday will be used as a rain date. The
track is located at 3865 Rts 5 & 20 Geneva Turnpike Canandaigua N.Y
14424.

Hotaling, Olmsted & Hillman take Putnam Propulsion SDS Wins at
Redneck
The Putnam Propulsion WDRA Super Dirt Series held the second event for
the Western Region at Redneck R/C. A whopping 85 entries, set another
record for a non-Summernationals WDRA event, breaking the mark set by
Radio Hill, just a few weeks before.
In the Big Block 19-turn division it was a repeat of race 1, as Jeff
Hotaling took his second win of the season. Hotaling, took the lead
from his pole starting position and really never looked back. The race
behind him for second was much more exciting as Shilo Boyce and Chris
Taylor traded the position several times during the event. B-Main bump
car Matt Olmsted also joined the fray for second in the middle stages of
the race. When the checkers fell, it was Hotaling taking the win
shortly after lapping the second place car of Chris Taylor. Boyce would
settle for third, followed by Olmsted. BJ Boycyck rounded out the top
5.
In the Small Block division, top qualifier Dave Lareau jumped out to the
early lead over Barry Wallace and Rob Hillman. Lareau was starting to
open up a big lead, but it would not last long, as he became a victim of
lapped traffic on several occasions. This would hand the top spot over
to Hillman. Lareau clearly had the faster car, but could not stay out
of trouble with slower cars. Over the final seconds of the main,
Hillman’s car began to slow with an ailing power plant, but he would
still be able to hang on for his first ever WDRA win. Barry Wallace
would just hold off Lareau for second, while Joe Rodriguez and Tom
Taylor rounded out the top 5.
In the 13.5 Brushless class, Jeff Hotaling jumped out to the lead after
setting the TQ mark. Hotaling would begin to pull away, as Matt Olmsted
and RHR winner Bob Baker took chase. As the leader was setting a
blistering pace, he was also making some slick moves in traffic. Near
the half way point Hotaling would get caught up in two consecutive
incidents, allowing Olmsted and Baker to assume the top two positions,
putting nearly 2 laps on Hotaling in the process. A late race charge
would find Hotaling back on the lead lap, but there was not enough time
to overtake the leaders. At the stripe it was Olmsted nailing down the
win followed by Baker. Hotaling had to settle for third, followed by
Chris Taylor and B-Main winner Tom Anderson.
In other action, Dylan Watier took the win in the inaugural event for
the JRC Sprint Car Challenge Series, while Terry Thompson captured the
A-Main for the Sliders. Gary Hall took the win in the Big Block Truck
division.
The next event for the Putnam Propulsion Super Dirt Series will be at
Fingerlakes Raceway in Canandaigua, NY. This will be the first event
for the combined Championship Series.
Wally’s notes:
·
Thanks to everyone for coming out for another great event.
·
Matt, Calvin and the rest of the Redneck crew did an outstanding job
with the track. It was in great shape.
·
My hats off to Jan Poyneer who served as race director. The races ran
quickly and smoothly. I was on my way home before 6:30!
·
Tough break for former series champ, Terry Schmitt. In the Big Block
B-Main he was all over Matt Olmsted like a cheap suit, looking for a way
past, when the spur gear stripped, dropping him from contention.
·
Speaking of the Big Block B, look at that line-up….Olmsted, Schmitt,
Blum, Gill, Watier & Jeffers….that could have been an A-main line-up on
any given day!
·
The high finishing Small Blockers from RHR ran into trouble at Redneck.
·
Another nice turnout for the Brushless class. It’s good to see this
grow.
·
Some nice looking sprint cars made debuts from JRC and Hyperdrive. On
this day, Dylan Watier had to be the heavy favorite going in…and he came
through. Watier opted to run a 17.5 brushless motor in his winning car.
·
Good to see some fresh faces in the Big Block A-Main….Shilo Boyce, BJ
Boycyk and Rick Pickens all had great runs.
·
Another large Capital District contingent made the tow to Redneck.
That’s it for this week. We’ll see everyone at Fingerlakes!

RHR Putnam Propulsion SDS
Checkers Fall to Hotaling, Baker and Bunker
For the fourth year in a row, the Putnam Propulsion WDRA Super Dirt
Series kicked off at Dundee, NY’s Radio Hill Raceway. It was a packed
house, with 84 entries shoehorned into the building, setting another
record for the track and for a non-Summernationals WDRA event, breaking
last year’s record. The weather outside was ice cold, but the action
inside was red hot, on the perfectly prepared RHR surface.
The Big Block 19-turn division was the first main on the track. Kevin
Ridley jumped out to the lead from the pole position, but by the time
lap 1 was completed outside pole sitter, Jeff Hotaling had taken
command. It was obvious that something was amiss on Ridley’s car, as he
quickly lost positions on the track, and eventually fell form
competition. First Matt Olmsted moved past, followed by Jason Blum, who
started in the day in the second starting spot of the D-Main.
While this was going on, Hotaling was checking out, and starting to move
into lapped traffic. Near the 3-minute mark, Hotaling slipped past
Olmsted to lap the field, putting his Putnam Pro Car on cruise control.
As the race was winding down, Hotaling would encounter only one hiccup
with a lapped car, allowing Olmsted and Blum to get back on the lead
lap. Hotaling would retain a nearly one lap lead at the finish, with
Olmsted and Blum at the tail end of the lead lap. Shannon Pitcher would
finish up in 4th, while Dan Gill rounded out the top 5.
The next up was the Small Block A-main. Top qualifier EJ French shared
the front row Albany invader Bob Godgart. French took the early lead,
but it was Marty Bunker who would slip by as lap 2 was completed.
B-Main bump-up Kirt Coonradt quickly moved up to third and actually took
second for a few laps, before bobbling and allowing French to retake the
position.
Bunker was able to steer clear of trouble throughout the race, as French
tried to catch up from a three-quarter lap deficit. French began to
click off some faster laps in the late stages of the race, but there was
not enough time for him to catch the leader. Coonradt would finish up
in third, with Bruce Rawleigh and Roger Hill also in the top 5.
In the new 13.5 Brushless class, RHR regular Bob Baker would dominate
the event, leading the entire distance. At the start, Baker jumped to
the lead followed by Tom Anderson and Chris Taylor. Anderson would keep
pace with Baker until the 1/3 point of the race where he got caught up
in traffic. Meanwhile Lee Morris had moved into third and Dan Gill to
4th.
At the finish, Baker held about a ½ lap lead over Anderson, Morris and
Gill. Taylor rounded out the top 5.
In the regular Radio Hill Divisions, Scott Baldwin took the win in the
Losi Slider class, Jason Morris took Stock Truck and Nick Stives was the
winner in the Sportsman Division.
The series will next move to Redneck R/C Raceway on April 20th. Stay
tuned to the WDRA website for more details.
Wally’s notes:
·
Thanks to everyone for coming out and making this a great event once
again.
·
Greg and Bill did a fantastic job with the track and running the show.
There were 19 races per round and the whole program was finished in less
than 6 hours.
·
As always the gals in behind the counter at the concession stand did a
great job as well!
·
It was great to see a large contingent of Capital District runners make
the long haul to the Fingerlakes region of NY. I think I counted 10
racers from that region.
·
Speaking of long hauls how about Glenn Norton and RJ Dittmer from below
the Mason-Dixon!
·
Even though Todd Putnam was working on his Nitro program in NC, 2 of his
cars had A-Main runs with Kevin Ridley and Kirt Coonradt at the
controls.
·
I think Jason Blum owes the track some more money. He had WAY more
track time than anyone else, bumping to the A-Main in Big Block after
starting in the D! I know ,as I was one of the many cars he passed
during his march to the front!
·
In the RHR Sportsman division Nick Stives took the win in just his third
ever race…and first on dirt! I know this because he is my neighbor.
Nick expects to hit some races in the SB division this summer.
·
Also in the Sportsman class was “Little Mr. JRC”, Greg Jeffery.
Hopefully we’ll see more of this young gun this summer as well.
·
I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout for the inaugural WDRA
brushless race…15 entries for the day.
·
Speaking of the Brushless class, good to see Brian Bettis make the haul
from the Hamilton, Ontario area. We havn’t seen Brian since the last
WDRA event at the old RC World track back in 2002.
·
Drivers were pitting everywhere in the building….Gary Hollinger utilized
RHR’s turn 3 sofa!
·
Thanks to graphics guys like Dan Gill, there are a lot of good looking
cars at the track these days!
·
Thanks to Kipp of Kipp’s Hobbies for a few door prizes! Kipp then drove
a Bob Mott team car in the Small Block division.
·
Speaking of Bob, it was very unusual to not find him in the thick of
things in the A-Main. I guess even the man to beat at RHR can have an
off day every now and then!
·
Frenchie arrived in time to run the second round of heats, and promptly
laid down a TQ run with his CDK ride…with no practice!
·
Good to see Terry Schmitt at the track. Hopefully he can follow the
whole tour this year.
·
TJ Holt and Jim Decker moved up to Big Block this year from the Small
Block division, while 2007 SB champ Mike Jeffery has moved on to the
Brushless division. Jeffery probably fared the best, just missing the
Brushless A-Main cut by one position.
·
Barry Wallace’s WDRA headaches continued into 2008….after just missing
the cut for a direct transfer into the Small Block A-Main, he probably
had the fastest car in the B, but got swept up into a few wrecks, which
eventually ended his day too early. Barry was running one of 2
Hyperdrive Havocs that were in the pits. Of course the other was
wheeled by Dylan Watier.
That’s it for this week. We’ll see everyone at Redneck. Lets try to
break the new entry record!

Putnam
Propulsion Super Dirt Series, West Region Kicks Off at Radio Hill
For the fourth year in a row, the WDRA Putnam Propulsion Super Dirt
Series will kick off at Dundee, NY’s Radio Hill Raceway on Saturday
March 29th. This will be the first event on the Western Regional
Series. Last year it was a packed house, with 75 entries squeezed into
the building, setting a record for the track and for a non-Summernationals
WDRA event. While the pitting situation was tight, the racing was even
tighter on the super-tacky oval.
In 2007, perennial Radio Hill hotshoe, Bob Mott swept the Modified and
Big Block Stock classes. In the Modified class, Jeff Hotaling and Chico
Taylor chased Mott across the line, while in Big Block it was Dylan
Watier and Kevin Ridley completing the top three.
In last year’s Small Block race, Capital District invader Todd Moran
took the win in dominating fashion. 2007 champion Mike Jeffery finished
up in second, while Radio Hill regular Martin Hubbard rounded out the
top three.
In 2008, the racing should be even better. There has been a lot of
interest in this race, and it looks like we may break last year’s
attendance record.
This year classes running for points in the Western Series will be Big
Block 19-turn, Small Block and Brushless EDM. Other classes on the card
will be Open Modified (unsanctioned, but per WDRA rules), RHR Sportsman,
Stock Sliders and Trucks.
On Saturday March 29th, doors
will open at 8am, with practice starting at 9am. Controled practice
starts 9:30. Racing starts at noon. The track is located at 1219
Shannon Corners rd., Dundee, NY 14837.

Putnam Propulsion
Signs on as Super Dirt Series Title Sponsor
Putnam
Propulsion
will
once
again
break
new
ground
in
dirt
oval
racing
this
season.
Putnam Propulsion has been a supporter of the WDRA since its inception
in 2001. The motor and dirt oval power house will step
up its support of dirt oval racing to an even higher level in 2008.
As part of the arrangement, a
brand new Putnam Pro-Car, assembled by Todd Putnam himself will be
raffled off, with proceeds going into the point fund for the 2008
Putnam Propulsion Super Dirt Series. The value of this car is
approximately $700. If the raffle goes well, a second Pro-Car will
be raffled off later in the year. Tickets will be available for
$10 each or 2 for $18. More details on this will be coming up
shortly.
The 2008 Putnam Pro-Car has
already taken the tracks by storm by taking EDM Stock TQ at the US Open
Wheel Championships and putting several cars in the A-mains for stock
and modified. At the Bumps & Jumps February Freeze, the Pro-Car's
stats were even more impressive. Pro-Cars took TQ in stock EDM,
and occupied 5 out of 8 positions on the A-Main starting grid. In
the Modified EDM class, when the checkered flag fell, Pro-Cars swept the
top 3 positions. As if this weren't enough, '08 Pro-Cars swept all
3 nights of Redneck R/C's Duel in the Dungeon. All of this while
developing a Nitro car, which has already taken its share of accolades,
and introducing an all new line of brushless motors which powered the
aforementioned top 3 EDM mods at the Freeze.
Exciting things are happening
at Putnam Propulsion in 2008 and the WDRA couldn't be more pleased to
have them on board. Please support Putnam Propulsion and all of
the other great sponsors of the Putnam Propulsion Super Dirt Series.
